Sekiro Anime Series to Debut in January 2027

The eagerly awaited animated rendition of FromSoftware's acclaimed game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, will finally be available for streaming. Crunchyroll announced on Thursday that Sekiro: No Defeat is scheduled to premiere on the anime platform in January 2027. Interestingly, the streaming version will take a different form than its initial theatrical release, unfolding as an eight-episode series instead of a single film.

The announcement regarding Sekiro: No Defeat's streaming availability coincides with the conclusion of its extended cinematic run in Japan. While the theatrical cut was presented as a 107-minute movie, the forthcoming streaming release of No Defeat will offer an enhanced, more extensive adaptation. Producer Tetsushi Suzuki addressed this change on the anime's official website, expressing regret for not having previously disclosed the episodic nature of the project. He explained that the initial intention was an eight-episode television series, but the team felt compelled to offer a preview of its stunning visuals and audio on the big screen first. Suzuki assured viewers that the TV series would include exclusive scenes and cuts, providing a fresh and distinct appeal while remaining faithful to the original narrative, inviting both theatrical viewers and new audiences to anticipate its release.

Kenichi Kutsuna directed Sekiro: No Defeat for anime studio Qzil.la, with Shunsuke Fukui serving as assistant director. Takahiro Kishida was responsible for character design, and Shuta Hasunuma composed the music. Crunchyroll provided the official synopsis for Sekiro: No Defeat: it describes a fragmented Japan where the sacred land of Ashina is threatened by the Interior Ministry. Genichiro, Isshin's grandson, resorts to forbidden powers to protect his homeland, relying on a kidnapped boy, the Divine Heir, and his loyal shinobi protector, Sekiro. The narrative chronicles the journey of a lord and his retainer striving to restore equilibrium to a nation on the brink of collapse. The series will begin streaming in January 2027, with new episodes released weekly, and a new poster was unveiled alongside the announcement.
