My First MMO Character: A Journey Through Virtual Worlds

By Richard Garfield

By Richard Garfield
The tale begins not with the very first brush with online worlds, a hazy memory of Ultima Online in 1998 lost to the mists of time, but with a more vivid recollection from university days. During this formative period, the author's virtual life truly blossomed across iconic titles such as World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies, and Guild Wars. These were the arenas where their most memorable character would take shape.
Enter Zarwulf, the formidable Orc Hunter. Clad in impressive armor and bearing a stern visage, he was often accompanied by a loyal canine companion. This character, a testament to countless hours spent questing and battling, remains preserved in his digital state, a snapshot from a bygone era of gaming. The author opts against revisiting this past, believing some memories are best left untarnished, allowing Zarwulf to exist perfectly within his historical context.
Despite remaining untouched in World of Warcraft, the spirit of Zarwulf lives on. His essence has been reincarnated in the vibrant world of Guild Wars 2, where the author occasionally engages in new adventures as a Daredevil, adopting the familiar moniker. This continuation highlights the deep bond players form with their characters, transcending individual game titles and evolving alongside their gaming journeys.
