Connie Vogelmann Unveils 'Tideward' at Essen Game Fair

Connie Vogelmann, a distinguished board game creator, is set to unveil her latest creation, 'Tideward,' at the renowned Essen Game Fair on October 22nd. Following the success of her bee-inspired 'Apiary' in 2023 and the dragon-themed 'Wyrmspan' in 2024, Vogelmann continues to draw inspiration from the natural world. 'Tideward' invites two to four participants to navigate freshly hatched sea turtles from their beach nests to the sanctuary of underwater algal mats, all while evading lurking predators.

The gameplay of 'Tideward' is characterized by its strategic depth within a lighter framework. Players are granted three actions per turn: hatching eggs, collecting sustenance to fuel the turtles' journey, or directing the hatchlings. The arrangement of turtles on different algal mats yields varying scores, complemented by secret quest cards that offer additional points for achieving specific objectives. The game concludes once a player successfully guides all their turtles into the water, with the highest score determining the victor. Vogelmann shared that the concept for 'Tideward' emerged during a stroll at Gen Con, where she envisioned simplifying a complex game idea to focus on automated movement, leading quickly to the theme of baby sea turtles.

Unlike her previous titles, 'Wyrmspan' and 'Apiary,' which cater to players aged 14 and above, 'Tideward' is crafted as an accessible family game for ages 10 and up. Vogelmann emphasizes her belief in letting the game's inherent nature dictate its design, avoiding unnecessary complexity. Her primary joy in game design lies in welcoming new enthusiasts into the hobby. 'Tideward' will be showcased for the first time at the Avalon Hill and Hasbro booth at the Essen fair, the world's largest board game trade event, running from October 22nd to 25th. The game is slated for release on January 16, 2027, with a retail price of $39.99.
