In September, the debut of the Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set was marred by technical glitches and overwhelming demand. Many eager buyers faced frustratingly long queues and failed transactions, leading to a quick sell-out and widespread disappointment. Wizards of the Coast promptly issued an apology, acknowledging the poor experience and pledging a thorough investigation into the system failures that plagued the launch.
Matthew Hodgins, the director of Secret Lair, offered a detailed explanation for the September sale's shortcomings. He revealed that an external service disruption impacted the backend systems, causing instability. His decision to pause the queue, while technically sound to prevent further issues, unfortunately left thousands waiting with no clear information, as inventory appeared to deplete faster than initial estimates. This led to only a fraction of those waiting successfully completing their purchases.
For those fortunate enough to have successfully placed an order during the initial, troubled sale, Wizards of the Coast has provided an update on shipping timelines. North American customers can expect their sets to begin shipping around November 5th, while European and UK buyers should anticipate dispatch starting December 8th.
To prevent a repeat of the previous chaos, Wizards of the Coast is implementing a new strategy for the upcoming sale of Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set. On December 9th, the set will be available for a 24-hour ordering window. This extended period ensures that anyone who places an order within this timeframe will have their request fulfilled, eliminating the need for frantic real-time competition. However, this second batch of sets will have a longer lead time, with shipping projected for the second half of 2027.
Recognizing that the delayed shipping and revised release strategy might not appeal to all original purchasers, Wizards of the Coast is offering a cancellation option. Customers who successfully pre-ordered in September but no longer wish to keep their order can submit a cancellation request by October 9th. The company assures a no-questions-asked cancellation policy, honoring the changed circumstances for these early adopters.
