Volkswagen Enhances IQ.DRIVE with New Driver-Assist Features

Volkswagen is set to introduce a suite of advanced driver-assistance features in its 2027 Atlas, ID.Buzz, Golf, and Tiguan models, significantly upgrading the IQ.DRIVE system. A key highlight is the enhanced Travel Assist, which now allows for automated lane changes simply by partially engaging the turn signal when traveling above 45 miles per hour. This system intelligently scans blind spots and executes the maneuver, holding the request for up to 12 seconds and signaling with a digital cockpit arrow if the lane is occupied, with the ID.Buzz featuring a distinct white arrow for clarity.

Further bolstering safety, the updated IQ.DRIVE includes Emergency Assist Plus. Building upon existing driver-monitoring capabilities, this system intervenes if no steering input is detected for several seconds. It issues escalating alerts, applies brake jerks, maintains lane positioning, and can guide the vehicle to the right shoulder or the rightmost lane if the shoulder is blocked, bringing it to a controlled stop, engaging park, unlocking doors, and initiating an emergency call. Additionally, rear pedestrian detection is being integrated into the Atlas, Tiguan, and ID.Buzz, automatically applying brakes if a pedestrian enters the vehicle's path while reversing at low speeds.

The Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control also receives substantial improvements for 2027. This system, which utilizes map and traffic sign data to anticipate road conditions, will now react more swiftly to speed limit changes and provide smoother operation in diverse traffic scenarios. Its functionality extends to highway ramps, assisting with deceleration and lane placement for exits based on turn signal engagement or active navigation. Volkswagen emphasizes that these IQ.DRIVE features constitute Level 2 assistance, requiring active driver supervision rather than offering full autonomy, underscoring a commitment to enhancing convenience and safety without replacing human control.
