Ubisoft Ditches Mandatory PC Game Launcher for Steam Titles

Ubisoft is reportedly initiating a test phase to integrate Ubisoft Connect features directly into its Steam games, eliminating the need for players to install or launch the separate Ubisoft Connect PC launcher. This change is being piloted with the game Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, allowing players to access functionalities such as cross-play and cross-progression without the additional software.
The Ubisoft Connect PC launcher has frequently been a source of discontent among PC gamers. The necessity to open a secondary launcher after initiating a game through Steam adds an extra, often cumbersome, step. Furthermore, these launchers are typically linked to specific publisher accounts and embedded with DRM, which can complicate the gaming experience and restrict player freedom.
The gaming community, particularly on platforms like Reddit, has reacted with widespread approval to the news of Ubisoft potentially discontinuing its mandatory launcher for Steam. Players have voiced their desire for this change to extend to older Ubisoft titles, hoping to enjoy a more streamlined and less obstructed gaming experience on their preferred platforms, including devices like the Steam Deck.
Direct verification of Ubisoft's new policy has proven somewhat challenging. While reports suggest the change is being tested, access to the specific Steam news update outlining these modifications appears to be restricted to owners of The Lost Crown. Attempts by general users to view the announcement have often resulted in errors, indicating a gradual or limited rollout of information.
Ubisoft's alleged statement indicates that this initial step is designed to foster a more fluid and integrated experience for players on Steam. The company has expressed intentions to continually refine and enhance Ubisoft Connect Services, with the ultimate goal of delivering expected features while ensuring the Steam platform remains as seamless as possible. This initiative is expected to expand to more Ubisoft games over time.
The broader issues surrounding mandatory launchers are exemplified by other titles, such as Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. Although not using a dedicated launcher, this Sony-published game mandates a PSN account login on Steam, creating accessibility problems in regions where PSN is unavailable. This situation highlights how external service requirements can negatively impact game performance and player satisfaction, prompting community efforts to bypass such restrictions for an improved experience.
