Following a 14-year absence, acclaimed actor Tom Hanks is slated to grace the Broadway stage once again, headlining the upcoming production “This World of Tomorrow.” This theatrical venture marks a significant return for Hanks, whose last Broadway appearance in Nora Ephron’s “Lucky Guy” in 2013 earned him a Tony nomination. For this new play, he will share the spotlight with accomplished theater performer Kelli O’Hara, with whom he previously collaborated during the show's well-received Off-Broadway engagement at The Shed last year.
“This World of Tomorrow” is an adaptation of a collection of short stories penned by Hanks himself, co-written for the stage with James Glossman. The narrative, characterized as a “time-travel romance,” is set in the late 21st century and centers on Bert Allenberry, a character determined to alter his future by revisiting the past. The official synopsis reveals that Bert embarks on multiple journeys back to a specific day at the 1939 New York World's Fair in Queens, ultimately discovering that destiny is shaped not by technological advancements but by the decisions made in the pursuit of love. Directed by Kenny Leon, known for his work on productions such as “The Balusters” and “Othello,” the play will be staged at a Shubert theater, with further casting and creative team details expected to be announced soon.
Kenny Leon expressed his enthusiasm for continuing work on this “amazing new American play,” highlighting the timeliness of exploring its themes of love and temporal journeys. He particularly looks forward to a broader audience experiencing the compelling chemistry between Kelli O’Hara and Tom Hanks. Alex Poots, artistic director of The Shed, praised Hanks as a “beloved actor” and lauded the play for its reminder that despite global changes, profound human connections endure, and love possesses the power to transcend any era. Producer Brian Anthony Moreland regarded it as an “incredible privilege” to bring this work to Broadway, emphasizing that the play, which delves into the enduring strength of love across different timeframes, finds a perfect home in the magical realm of live theater, underscoring the timeless nature of our capacity to love.
This upcoming production of “This World of Tomorrow” offers a poignant reflection on the human experience, reminding us that while the currents of time may shift and technology may advance, the fundamental power of love and the choices we make for it remain constant. It's a testament to the idea that true connection and the pursuit of a better future are intrinsically linked to the depths of our emotional landscape, resonating across generations and inspiring a belief in the transformative potential of human affection.
