Suzanne Farwell's highly anticipated romantic comedy, "Otherwise Engaged," set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, has generated significant buzz, securing a multitude of international distribution agreements even before the official start of the American Film Market (AFM).
Mister Smith Entertainment, which first introduced this exciting project at the Toronto International Film Festival market in September, has successfully brokered a series of key deals. Sky has acquired rights for the United Kingdom, VVS for Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and Leonine for Germany. Eagle Pictures will distribute the film in Italy, DeAPlaneta and TriPictures in Spain, while Nordisk Film has secured rights for Scandinavia and Iceland, indicating widespread European interest.
The film features Jack Whitehall and Zoë Kravitz as Charlie and Gabby, a couple whose carefully planned wedding takes an unexpected turn. Their marital bliss is threatened by the sudden appearance of Charlie’s estranged father, portrayed by Colin Firth, a disgraced business mogul recently released from prison. Complicating matters further, he unexpectedly finds love with Gabby’s fiercely independent mother, played by Halle Berry. This creates a fascinating dynamic where the engaged couple must navigate not only their own relationship challenges but also a burgeoning, unexpected romance within their families.
Suzanne Farwell, renowned for her collaborations with Nancy Meyers on hits such as "The Holiday" and "It’s Complicated," is set to direct the film from a screenplay she co-authored with Gabriel Mizrahi. The production is scheduled to commence filming on the bustling streets of New York in March 2027, promising an authentic and engaging cinematic experience.
Additional international sales have further cemented the film's global reach. Front Row has acquired rights for the Middle East, Pasatiempo Pictures for the Baltics, and Monolith for Poland. ProRom will distribute the film across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. NOS Lusomundo has secured Portugal, The Film Group Greece, and Provzglyad and Vesta Film the CIS territories. Independent Films will handle distribution in Benelux, DCM Film AG in Switzerland, and Anuvu Distribution has obtained worldwide airline and ship rights, ensuring broad accessibility.
Farwell and Susan Cartsonis are producing the film under the Resonate Entertainment banner, alongside Laura Rister for Esme Grace Pictures. Clément Bauer will serve as executive producer for Resonate. Mister Smith will continue to explore distribution opportunities in remaining international territories at AFM in Los Angeles, while CAA Media Finance is managing the U.S. rights, positioning the film for comprehensive market penetration.
