Lucky Nintendo enthusiasts who successfully secured a pre-order for the exclusive The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch 2 console are now unboxing their sleek new devices, only to stumble upon a delightful, unforeseen surprise. This unexpected treat is adding an extra layer of excitement to the console's arrival.
The highly anticipated hardware, officially launched on October 29th, experienced a somewhat tumultuous debut. Major retailers struggled to manage demand, leading to an overselling of their initial stock. Despite these hurdles, the excitement surrounding the console, adorned in its distinctive green and gold, remained incredibly high, with pre-orders consistently selling out in mere moments. While much attention has been given to the console's impressive Triforce motifs and its vibrant Joy-Con 2 controllers, a subtle detail cleverly concealed by Nintendo went unnoticed by many.
This hidden gem isn't exactly a secret, but it was tucked away deep within the official Nintendo store's image gallery, appearing only after nine other images. Furthermore, this artistic flourish was never showcased in the console's promotional videos. Consequently, while a few sharp-eyed fans had already spotted it, a significant portion of the fanbase was completely unaware of its existence until now.
Upon removing the console's dock cover, owners will discover a miniature pixel art illustration depicting Link and Zelda. The iconic RPG protagonists are shown holding their respective fragments of the Triforce, their expressions radiating joy. Positioned above them is a collection of 16 heart containers, a direct homage to the health capacity in the original NES version of The Legend of Zelda.
Nintendo has a history of incorporating similar surprises into its products. Examples include the concealed Triforce on the Game & Watch and the coin patterns adorning the rear of the Mario-themed red Switch 2. The new Zelda 40th Anniversary Collection itself is rich with numerous subtle references to the extensive franchise. For instance, the back of the latest Switch 2 Pro Controller features a retro-inspired depiction of Link in mid-attack. Fans are also discovering that the anniversary edition's specialized carrying case includes a microfiber cloth embossed with additional pixel art from The Legend of Zelda series.
