During the recent RuneFest event, RuneScape developer Jagex unveiled a trailer for its highly anticipated 'Dragon Slayer 2' quest. However, keen-eyed viewers quickly spotted an unusual detail: a character in the video possessed a six-fingered hand, alongside a peculiar, sneaker-like sole on their armored footwear.

The immediate online reaction highlighted the tell-tale signs of generative AI in the promotional material. This unfortunate reveal came hot on the heels of another AI-related controversy involving a clothing collaboration with 100 Thieves, putting Jagex in a difficult position.

Alec 'Mod Sween' Sween from Old School RuneScape promptly addressed the situation on Reddit, taking full responsibility. He stated, "We're aware of the concerns raised about the Dragon Slayer 2 trailer and have taken it down, while we investigate this urgently." Sween explained that a trusted external partner, who had assured Jagex that generative AI would not be used, produced the trailer. He further admitted that the presence of a six-fingered character was "pretty hard to explain away" and offered an apology on behalf of the company. Sween reaffirmed Jagex's firm stance against using generative AI for game development, artwork, or creative assets, and emphasized their commitment to ensuring partners adhere to these principles. Recognizing a flaw in their review process, Jagex announced an overhaul of their verification procedures and pledged to collaborate with community creators to ensure future content meets the expected standards for a significant update like 'Dragon Slayer 2'.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder for companies to maintain rigorous oversight of their creative processes and external collaborations, especially in rapidly evolving technological landscapes. Upholding authenticity and the integrity of creative work fosters trust and a positive relationship with the community, reinforcing the value of human artistry and meticulous production standards.
