“An Open Field” stands as a poignant cinematic endeavor, delving into the profound emotional aftermath of the devastating March 2019 Boeing 737 MAX crash near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This tragedy claimed 157 lives, among them Max Thabiso Edkins. In response, his older brother, Teboho Edkins, embarked on a deeply personal journey to create this 38-minute documentary short. Co-produced by his father, Don Edkins, and Carine Chichkowsky, the film is a heartfelt exploration of the grief and mourning experienced by both the Edkins family and the local Ethiopian community. Having garnered the best short documentary award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) 2025, “An Open Field” is now set for a global release on Netflix on December 1st, offering a universal narrative of loss and human connection.
The film’s title, “An Open Field,” vividly illustrates a central theme of collective human empathy and resilience. It reveals how dozens of villagers immediately converged on the crash site to offer assistance, with some maintaining a month-long vigil to safeguard the area. Years later, their unwavering support continues as they mourn alongside visiting family members, including the director and his father. This communal response sharply contrasts with Boeing’s criticized handling of the disaster, highlighting the enduring compassion of the community. The narrative evolves into a powerful testament to the healing potential of shared mourning, presenting a mosaic of human emotions—warmth, resolve, sorrow, fear, patience, and simple acts of kindness—that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries. This film is more than a personal elegy; it is a universal story about confronting loss and finding solace in shared humanity, resonating with anyone who has experienced the burden of losing a loved one, as the victims originated from over 30 different nations.
“An Open Field,” a collaborative production involving South Africa’s Day Zero Film and Video Productions, Germany’s Day Zero Films UG, and France’s Survivance, is a testament to the power of film in capturing the essence of human experience. Through the lens of cinematographer Jide Akinleminu and the editing of Anne Fabini, the film masterfully weaves together color and black-and-white footage, with dialogue in both English and Amharic, creating a rich tapestry of emotion and reflection. Director Teboho Edkins expresses his hope that this delicate and deeply personal work, which touches upon fundamental aspects of being human, will reach a vast audience and resonate with many. He conveys profound gratitude for Netflix’s support in bringing this significant story to a global stage, emphasizing the importance of its message finding its way into the world.
In a world often fragmented by individual suffering, “An Open Field” serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating that even in the darkest moments of loss, the collective human spirit can unite, offering solace and demonstrating the profound power of empathy. It reminds us that compassion, community, and shared humanity are invaluable forces in navigating grief, fostering healing, and affirming the enduring strength of the human heart.
