Nia Long, a celebrated actress, is set to appear in Teyana Taylor's inaugural directorial feature, 'Get Lite.' This cinematic endeavor, backed by Paramount, will feature an impressive lineup of talent. The film centers on a dance student's journey of self-discovery, finding both romance and a sense of belonging amidst the dynamic environment of New York City's subway network.
In a significant development for the cinematic world, veteran actress Nia Long, fresh from her impactful role in the hit biopic 'Michael,' has officially joined the cast of Teyana Taylor's highly anticipated directorial debut, 'Get Lite.' This Paramount Pictures production is poised to be a compelling drama, with an ensemble cast that includes Emmy Award winner Storm Reid and former NFL player-turned-actor Ceyair Wright. Wright is slated to portray a gifted yet sheltered dance student who uncovers unexpected sources of inspiration, affection, and community within the bustling subways of New York City. Reid will play a pivotal role as the character who introduces him to a world of new possibilities.
This project marks a reunion for Long and Reid, who previously collaborated on the successful 2023 thriller 'Missing.' Long's extensive filmography also includes collaborations with producer Kenya Barris, such as the 2023 Netflix comedy 'You People' and the 2020 series '#BlackAF.' The 'Get Lite' cast boasts an array of distinguished actors, including Leslie Odom, Jr., Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jodie Turner-Smith, Asante Blackk, Woody McClain, Tylil James, and Khayr Bullock.
Production for 'Get Lite' is already underway in the vibrant setting of New York City. Taylor is directing the film from a screenplay penned by Maurice Williams, which is based on an original spec script by Eric Gross that gained recognition on the Black List in 2020. Paramount is planning a widespread theatrical release for the film on August 20, 2027.
Beyond her acting role, Reid is also contributing to the film as a producer alongside Barris and Anni Weisband through Khalabo Ink Society, and with Robyn Simpson via A Seed & Wings Productions, Reid’s personal banner, as well as Bill Karesh representing Offbrnd. Taylor herself is also taking on a producing role for the film, alongside Courtney “Coco” Gilbert, under their joint production company, The Aunties.
Just last month, Long, a recipient of four NAACP Image Awards, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a testament to her enduring legacy as an icon in both film and television. Her most recent triumph was in 'Michael,' the blockbuster biographical film chronicling the life of the late pop superstar Michael Jackson. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Oscar winner Graham King, the Lionsgate film achieved global success, grossing over $1 billion and surpassing 'Oppenheimer' as the highest-earning biopic in history. In 'Michael,' Long delivered a powerful performance as Katherine Jackson, the matriarch of the Jackson family, starring alongside Oscar nominee Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew, who embodied the King of Pop.
Looking ahead, Long is set to executive produce and star in the Netflix film 'Don’t Ever Wonder,' which will reunite her with her 'Love Jones' co-star, Lorenz Tate. She is also slated to co-star with Ice Cube in 'Are We Done Yet?', the third installment in their popular 'Are We There Yet?' family comedy franchise, and will reprise her role in the upcoming 'Friday movie.'
Long's memoir, which will chronicle her remarkable life and career, including her iconic roles in films such as 'Boyz n the Hood,' 'The Best Man' franchise, 'Soul Food,' 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,' 'Third Watch,' 'Tyler Perry’s The Single Mom’s Club,' 'Dear White People,' 'Fatal Affair,' 'The Banker,' and 'Roxanne, Roxanne,' among others, is scheduled for publication in 2027.
The announcement of Nia Long joining 'Get Lite' highlights the exciting landscape of contemporary cinema, where established talent and emerging voices converge to create compelling narratives. Teyana Taylor's directorial debut, with such a strong cast and a heartfelt story, holds immense promise for audiences. It also underscores the continuous evolution of careers in Hollywood, where actors transition into directorial roles and legends like Nia Long continue to grace the screen with their powerful presence. This film is a testament to the enduring appeal of stories that explore human connection and the unexpected paths to fulfillment, all set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City's diverse cultural tapestry.
