Michael Jordan, renowned for his unparalleled achievements on the basketball court, is equally celebrated for his extraordinary horological collection. What distinguishes Jordan's watch selections is his penchant for exploring unconventional pieces that truly mirror his individual aesthetic, rather than simply adhering to popular trends. A striking illustration of this preference is his latest acquisition: a remarkable Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 Universelle RD#4, a unique masterpiece that diverges from the brand's more widely recognized Royal Oak series.
During a speaking engagement in Lisbon, Portugal, Jordan was observed sporting this exclusive RD#4, characterized by an 18-karat white-gold and black ceramic case. Despite its seemingly understated appearance, this "panda chronograph" is a highly sophisticated creation from Audemars Piguet's advanced research and design division, representing the pinnacle of their innovative watchmaking. The Code 11.59 Universelle RD#4 is celebrated for being one of Audemars Piguet's most technically ambitious timepieces, incorporating an astounding 23 complications and 40 functions within its 42mm case. Its extensive list of features reads like a comprehensive catalog of horological capabilities, including a split-seconds chronograph, flyback function, minute repeater, grande and petite sonnerie, perpetual calendar, moon phase, and a flying tourbillon, among others. This modern marvel draws inspiration from a complex pocket watch crafted by Audemars Piguet in 1899, an artifact so significant it is displayed at the brand’s Musée Atelier. The standard Code 11:59 Universelle model, introduced in 2023, garnered the prestigious Aiguille d’Or at the GPHG, an award equivalent to a "Best Picture" Oscar in the film industry. Jordan's personalized version elevates this already exceptional watch, featuring an 18-karat white-gold case, a black ceramic octagonal mid-case, and a textured black rubber-coated strap, a bespoke creation that is not entirely unexpected given Audemars Piguet’s tradition of offering customization options for this model since its debut, ensuring each piece possesses a unique identity.
This exceptional timepiece seamlessly integrates into Jordan's already impressive collection, which includes a diverse range of watches from a refined A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Flyback to astonishing creations by Greubel Forsey, Urwerk, and Vanguart. Although the Code 11:59 series, launched in 2019, has yet to achieve widespread popularity among general collectors, this did not deter Jordan from acquiring one of Audemars Piguet's most innovative and cool watches.
Jordan's choice highlights a profound appreciation for intricate craftsmanship and individual expression in the world of luxury watches. His collection serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that true elegance and value lie not merely in brand recognition or market trends, but in the discerning selection of pieces that embody technical mastery, unique design, and personal resonance. It underscores the idea that passion and individuality can elevate any pursuit to an art form, whether on the basketball court or in the realm of high horology.
