On July 28, a joint declaration from Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, and BlackRock, the world's preeminent asset management firm, unveiled their cooperative endeavor to develop and operate a new data center facility in El Paso, Texas. This ambitious undertaking represents an investment estimated at approximately $14 billion.
The intensifying competition to build robust artificial intelligence infrastructure is compelling leading technology corporations to pursue diverse funding avenues. This includes issuing significant amounts of debt, often totaling tens of billions of dollars, and seeking external capital from prominent financial institutions like BlackRock, reflecting the unprecedented scale of required investment in this sector.
Under the terms of the agreement, funds administered by BlackRock will secure an 80% equity interest in the joint venture, with Meta retaining the remaining 20% ownership. A substantial portion of BlackRock's capital contribution, specifically $12.5 billion, will be financed through debt instruments. Furthermore, Meta is slated to receive a $1 billion distribution to facilitate the alignment of ownership interests.
Meta's contribution to the project will encompass land and ongoing construction assets, collectively valued at approximately $2.3 billion. Concurrently, BlackRock will inject a cash sum of about $4.9 billion into the partnership, as confirmed by the companies.
The social media giant had previously disclosed plans for a data center project exceeding $10 billion in El Paso, strategically located near the Texas-New Mexico border. This facility is one of 28 data centers across the United States that Meta currently has either operational or under various stages of construction.
The El Paso data center campus, already in its construction phase, is engineered to deliver 1 gigawatt of computing power. This immense capacity is crucial for bolstering Meta's artificial intelligence technologies and supporting its fundamental business operations. Commercial operations at the site are projected to commence in 2028.
Meta has articulated its intention to commit $600 billion towards data center development by the year 2028. This substantial investment aims to accelerate progress in personal superintelligence, a key initiative expected to generate new revenue streams from platforms such as the Meta AI application, advanced image-to-video advertising tools, and smart glasses.
The tech behemoth is actively developing several gigawatt-scale data centers across the United States. Notable among these is a project in rural Louisiana, which Meta anticipates expanding to a staggering 5 gigawatts of computing capacity, pushing the total investment for that particular site beyond $50 billion.
Meta's shares have experienced a decline of approximately 10% year-to-date, as investors closely monitor the escalating costs associated with the company's aggressive AI expansion. The company is poised to release its second-quarter earnings report on July 29, a disclosure keenly awaited by the market. Morgan Stanley & Co and J.P. Morgan Securities provided financial advisory services to Meta for this transaction.
