Marcela Vélez Osorno, an influential figure known for co-founding the acclaimed bag brand M2Malletier, is now charting a new course with her latest project, House Number .01. Her vision diverges from the conventional fashion calendar, emphasizing the creation of unique, collectible accessories that stand apart from seasonal trends. By prioritizing bespoke craftsmanship and premium materials, Osorno aims to reshape consumer perceptions of luxury, transforming accessories into enduring works of art.
After a period of personal reflection and embracing motherhood, Osorno felt a renewed creative impulse. This time, her ambition was to establish a brand that transcended the typical fashion product, leaning more towards artistic expression. Relocating to a forest-nestled home in Zurich, Switzerland, designed by artist Ugo Rondinone, provided the perfect inspiration. The unique blend of Japanese design and European minimalism in her new environment fueled her research and development, culminating in the distinct aesthetic of House Number .01.
The debut product from House Number .01 is the "First Edition," a sculptural, spiral-shaped handbag. Its design is a testament to Osorno's fascination with the golden spiral and the Fibonacci sequence, embodying complex mathematical principles found in nature, alongside geometric influences from artists like Emma Kunz and Hilma af Klint. Each bag features a precious metal element, customizable with a selection of gemstones, blurring the lines between a handbag and a piece of exquisite jewelry. Production is intentionally limited, with only 50 of these made-to-order pieces available, starting at $5,800. Clients collaborate directly with Osorno to select from various leathers and 18 distinct color options.
Osorno articulated her desire to create something truly distinctive, focusing on consciousness, narrative, and core values rather than competing with established luxury giants. Drawing from her family's deep roots in the Colombian leather industry and her education at Parsons and extensive experience in Barcelona's handbag sector, Osorno is uniquely positioned to bring this vision to life. Her new venture is a heartfelt contribution to the art world, utilizing her profound understanding of materials and design to craft pieces with integrity and purpose.
Freed from the constraints of traditional fashion norms, Osorno plans to broaden House Number .01's offerings to include jewelry and potentially small-scale ceramics and sculptures. These future creations will continue to explore themes of intellectual geometry and numerology, reflecting the harmonious interplay between the natural and mathematical worlds. With new handbag designs, all meticulously produced in Italy, set to launch sequentially, each promises to be more dramatic and art-worthy than the last—featuring shapes like stars, seashells, and half-moons. Osorno embraces the exclusivity of her brand, stating, "Not everyone's going to love it, and not everyone's going to have it, and that's okay." This philosophy underscores her commitment to genuine luxury: an unparalleled, curated experience for a discerning clientele, rather than mass appeal.
