Magic: The Gathering 'Reality Fracture' Expansion Unveils Jace's Multiverse Redesign and New Mechanics

In the latest expansion for Magic: The Gathering, titled Reality Fracture, players are transported to a new academic setting, Hexhaven, a formidable mage tower featuring shifting gravity, peculiar students, and five distinct schools of magic founded by elder sphinxes. This new environment contrasts sharply with the magical college previously explored in Secrets of Strixhaven earlier this year.

During a recent press preview, Wizards of the Coast showcased 26 cards from Reality Fracture, delving into the set's innovative mechanics. Highlights include a potent new Jace Planeswalker card, "Echoverse" iterations of beloved Magic characters such as Karn and Ghalta, and extensive background on Hexhaven and Jace's ultimate ambitions for the multiverse. This set culminates a three-year narrative arc that began with Wilds of Eldraine in September 2023. Jace, having confronted formidable adversaries like the Phyrexians, Eldrazi, and Nicol Bolas, now seeks to remedy a perceived flaw in the multiverse by creating the Echoverse—an alternative reality where these threats never materialized. Achieving this vision, however, necessitates overwriting the existing multiverse and replacing its inhabitants with Jace's supposedly improved versions.

A central mechanic in Reality Fracture is "Empower Jace," which ensures Jace's pervasive influence across every game. This mechanic allows cards to generate blue Jace Planeswalker tokens with specified loyalty counters. If a player already controls such a token, additional counters are added instead. Jace's abilities include surveiling for one loyalty or drawing a card for three loyalty. This innovation enables even common cards to create Planeswalkers, making Jace a constant presence in most Limited games, as noted by lead designer Jeremy Geist. While Empower Jace specifically targets token Planeswalkers, preventing loyalty gains for cards like The Theorist, Jace Beleren, some cards offer alternative methods to create Jace token copies, thereby sidestepping this restriction. This ensures that Jace's manipulative influence is felt throughout the set.

The expansion also introduces "Echoverse" versions of iconic characters. Each Reality Fracture booster pack contains both a standard version and an Echoverse variant of a character. Examples include Karn, Gilded Guardian, a five-color 5/5 creature that reflects a Mirrodin untouched by Phyrexians, and Karn, Argent Defender, a disruptive 1/3 creature that prevents abilities from triggering when artifacts and creatures enter the battlefield. Similarly, Ghalta the Unstoppable, an 8/8 green creature, and Ghalta the Immovable, a white toughness-focused card, offer diverse interpretations of the Elder Dinosaur. Moreover, powerful cards like Hexhaven Invigorator, a 6/6 chimera horror, can rapidly accelerate mana production, while Return to the Light Realms allows players to resurrect multiple nonland permanents. The return of the "Prepared" mechanic from Secrets of Strixhaven adds another layer of strategic depth, allowing creatures to cast additional spells under specific conditions. Notable examples include Pompous Battlemage and Diviner of Victory, along with Bloodline Recollector, which features a reinterpretation of the iconic Black Lotus spell.

The narrative depth of Reality Fracture is further enriched by Hexhaven's five founder sphinxes, who lead allied-color disciplines in contrast to Strixhaven's enemy-color dragons. These sphinxes extend the typically blue creature type into new color combinations, influencing various schools of magic. Aerid Konstrari, a Gruul (red-green) sphinx, focuses on constructive arts and artifact synergy. Denzilore Fatehold, an Azorius (white-blue) sphinx, specializes in predicting the future and buffs creatures based on scry/surveil actions. Ingris Stingerquill, a Rakdos (black-red) sphinx, provides direct damage and generates Cadet tokens. Kwia Vigorbloom, a Selesnya (green-white) sphinx, is a formidable 6/6 creature that creates Lotus artifact tokens for mana generation. Lastly, Uldaros Theorix, representing Hexhaven's Dimir (blue-black) school, offers powerful spellcasting by exiling cards from the graveyard. These elder sphinxes are believed to inhabit the Hexhaven tower, which is beautifully depicted across 15 borderless basic lands, creating an immersive experience for players who manage to collect them all.
