Game Industry Icon Blasts BioWare's Closure: 'Utter Bullshit'

Warren Spector, a luminary in the realm of immersive simulation games, recently voiced his candid thoughts on the shuttering of BioWare, and his comments were surprisingly sharp. He prefaced his remarks with a caution for those with delicate sensibilities, indicating the gravity of his feelings on the matter.
In a concise statement posted on LinkedIn, Spector admitted his struggle to contain his language, particularly in public forums. He emphasized that BioWare was not merely another studio; it had been a pivotal force in the gaming landscape for decades, effectively blending artistic vision with commercial success and profoundly influencing the medium.
Then came the forceful condemnation, with Spector urging readers to brace themselves. He described the closure as devastating and historic, unequivocally calling it "utter bullshit." He asserted that all individuals involved in this unfortunate event should feel deep shame.
While his choice of words might not be the most extreme, it's notably strong for Spector, who is known for his calm and collected public persona. Friends and colleagues describe him as exceptionally pure-hearted. Yet, his message powerfully conveys the gravity of the situation. BioWare's closure, he suggests, is a stark indicator of fundamental problems within the industry and the world at large. He questions how a multi-billion-dollar company could simply discard a studio of BioWare's caliber.
The fact that Electronic Arts (EA) provoked such a passionate response from Spector, who is supposedly enjoying his retirement, underscores the severity of this misstep. His use of strong language perfectly captures the sentiment: this situation is indeed unacceptable.
Spector continued his impassioned critique, suggesting that those in corporate leadership—the "suits," whether literally or figuratively—should be the ones to lose their positions. He challenged them to consider their contributions to gaming and the consequences they face for their failures. He expressed a desire to see these decision-makers, rather than the actual creators, on the unemployment line, questioning why the burden of failure consistently falls on the doers and makers. He lamented his lack of stronger expletives to convey his frustration.
Spector's observation is piercingly accurate: it is a recurring pattern that executives remain largely unaffected when mass layoffs occur. Roughly 400 individuals were impacted by EA's recent cuts, including those from BioWare. Meanwhile, EA's CEO, Andrew Wilson, received a staggering compensation package in 2026, which was significantly higher than the previous year. Spector's chosen word, "bullshit," resonates deeply, perfectly encapsulating the outrage felt by many within the community.
