Reports from The Verge indicate that Dan Greenawalt, the visionary studio head of Turn 10 Studios, known for developing the Forza Motorsport series, is expected to conclude his tenure at Microsoft after nearly 27 years. This news, revealed through an internal communication from Trevor Williams of Playground Games, suggests Greenawalt's retirement, though he will initially remain in an advisory capacity to facilitate a smooth transition.
This reported departure aligns with Microsoft's previously announced plans from September to merge Turn 10 and Playground Games into a single unified entity. This consolidation is part of a larger corporate reorganization within Xbox, which also involves integrating Obsidian Entertainment into Bethesda Softworks and transferring the stewardship of the Halo franchise to Activision. Furthermore, these changes are accompanied by significant workforce reductions, with an additional 268 employees facing layoffs.
It's noted that Turn 10 had already transitioned into a supporting role for Playground's Forza Horizon series, particularly following the 2023 relaunch of Forza Motorsport. A former developer, Fred Russell, commented last year that the original Motorsport series had effectively ceased to exist during a previous wave of budget cuts at Microsoft. Greenawalt's exit and the ongoing restructuring highlight a pivotal period for the future direction and leadership of Microsoft's iconic racing game franchises.
