Finji, a prominent Michigan-based indie game developer and publisher celebrated for titles such as Tunic and Night in the Woods, is preparing to launch its newest creation, Usual June. This forthcoming game distinguishes itself by intertwining a compelling coming-of-age story with dynamic, Devil May Cry-inspired combat mechanics. Set in the peculiar Midwestern town of Fen Harbor, the narrative follows the protagonist, June, as she navigates a summer filled with peculiar occurrences—from spectral encounters to an interdimensional rift, all while grappling with the underlying economic anxieties of her fading hometown. This unique blend of narrative depth and action-packed gameplay positions Usual June as a potentially significant release for the Fall gaming season.
The developers at Finji have meticulously crafted Usual June to offer a balanced experience, featuring both introspective dialogue segments and thrilling combat sequences. The game's dialogue, developed with input from narrative consultant Cara Ellison, aims for authentic conversations among young adults, providing meaningful intermissions between battles. A notable innovation is the game's distinct voice rendering system, which transforms spoken words into a stylized, 'twee art house gibberish' through a custom-built Vocaloid engine, a process that took audio designer Adam Hays several years to perfect. Combat encounters are designed to be predictable, indicated by a 'green screen' barrier before each arena, allowing players to strategize. This system offers a 'low skill floor and high skill ceiling', encouraging accessibility while rewarding mastery, with June's health regenerating after fights to promote aggressive play. The visual style, enhanced by a comic-book-like frame rate effect, evokes comparisons to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Usual June's strength lies in its deliberate pacing, which intersperses intense combat with significant narrative exploration. The game allows ample space for character development and reflection on discoveries made by June and her companions, fostering a deep connection with the protagonists' journey. This thoughtful integration ensures that players are equally invested in the friendships and emotional beats as they are in the spectral battles. Finji’s track record of producing and curating successful indie games suggests that Usual June, with its unique blend of poignant storytelling and engaging action, is poised to be an unexpected success, challenging conventional genre expectations. The game is slated for release on Windows PC on October 28th, promising an experience that is anything but ordinary.
