Min of "Beef" fame in his inaugural Korean production. These significant sales endeavors aim to broaden the global reach of these compelling films, introducing them to a diverse international viewership.
These recent developments underscore the growing global interest in Korean cinema, highlighting the artistic merit and commercial viability of films like "Nowhere to Lay My Eyes" and "Journey There." The secured distribution deals are poised to elevate the profiles of both the directors and the actors involved, opening new avenues for their creative works on the international stage. Finecut's strategic efforts in navigating the complex landscape of film sales are instrumental in bringing these culturally rich narratives to a wider audience, fostering cross-cultural appreciation for Korean filmmaking.
Hong Sangsoo's "Nowhere to Lay My Eyes," a distinguished triple award-winner at the 79th Locarno Film Festival, has significantly broadened its international distribution network through Finecut. Recent agreements include Carlotta Films acquiring rights for France, Mimosa Films for Japan, Kligger for Argentina, and The Stone and the Plot for Portugal. These new partnerships complement previously secured deals with The Cinema Guild for North America, Filmgarten for Austria, Hugoeast for China, Atalante for Spain, Cola Films for Taiwan, and the Institute of Contemporary Arts for the U.K., demonstrating the film's widespread appeal and critical acclaim.
As Hong Sangsoo's 35th feature film, "Nowhere to Lay My Eyes" achieved recognition for best direction, best performance, and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Locarno. The film reunites Hong with his frequent collaborators Kim Minhee and Kwon Haehyo, while also marking his first partnership with Choi Myeonggil, known for her work in television. The production was spearheaded by Jeonwonsa Film Co. The extensive array of distribution deals reflects the film's compelling narrative and the director's distinctive cinematic style, ensuring its accessibility to diverse audiences across various continents and further cementing its status as an internationally celebrated work.
Kim Jin-yu's latest feature, "Journey There," which marks "Beef" actor Justin H. Min's debut in a Korean production, has successfully secured distribution deals in several territories. Andrews Film has acquired rights for Taiwan, KDDI Corporation for Japan, Lev Cinema for Israel, and Izagur Media for Mongolia, with Kairos Distribution managing inflight rights. This drama, focusing on a middle-aged widow's unexpected connections after moving into a new apartment, explores themes of new beginnings and unforeseen relationships, resonating with a global audience.
Following its Korean release on October 28, "Journey There" has been featured in prestigious film festivals worldwide, including the Moscow International Film Festival, the New York Asian Film Festival, and more recently, the Paris and London Korean film festivals. This film is Kim Jin-yu's second feature, building on the success of his debut, "Bori," which received two awards at the 24th Schlingel International Film Festival. Produced by Kim's own company, Pado, the film's international sales success at events like Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market and AFM further highlights its potential to captivate diverse audiences and establish itself as a significant entry in contemporary Korean cinema.
