Epic Games, the developer of the popular title Fortnite, is making a significant shift towards generative artificial intelligence, a move they are keen to highlight. Recently, the Epic Games Store Team announced the availability of a preview version for its revamped store launcher. This new launcher is claimed to surpass competitors, such as Steam, in various performance metrics. A notable detail, however, is Epic's candid admission that the launcher was developed through “vibe coding.”

The concept of “vibe coding,” as described by Epic, involves using AI to generate code without necessarily requiring programmers to fully understand its inner workings. This practice has drawn criticism from experienced software engineers who point to potential issues with maintainability and increased security vulnerabilities, as building upon code that isn't fully comprehended can be challenging and risky. Despite these concerns, a growing number of AI proponents are embracing this method, viewing it as an innovative step in software development.

Comparing the new Epic Games Store launcher to its predecessor and competitors, Epic notes that this initial release focuses on core functionality, likening it to a “speedboat” rather than a “yacht,” while still incorporating advanced features like a shopping cart. The company asserts that the new launcher initiates 46% faster than Valve's Steam in a cold start, booting up in just 5.47 seconds, and is 14% quicker when restoring from the system tray to the library. Additionally, the update promises smoother navigation, reduced system load when running in the background, integrated voice chat, enhanced game information within the library, customizable library views, faster filtering options, and more detailed download speed data.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has unequivocally articulated the company’s direction, emphasizing a drive towards “maximum AI acceleration” across all operations. Sweeney envisions AI not as a means to reduce staff, but as a tool to empower developers to create more and higher-quality content, extending these benefits to all teams utilizing Unreal Engine. This pro-AI stance is consistent with previous company actions, including the use of AI in developing Fortnite skins and Sweeney's defense of AI platforms amidst controversies, such as the debate over AI-generated images on social media. This forward-looking strategy highlights Epic's commitment to leveraging technological advancements to redefine game development and user experience.
