The burgeoning market for high-performance electric SUVs welcomes two intriguing entrants: the Porsche Macan GTS Electric and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. Despite their distinct price tags, these models share a common ground in their size and formidable performance capabilities. Our extensive testing provides a foundation for comparing these vehicles, offering insights into their real-world performance.
Delving into the core metrics, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N commands attention with an impressive 641 horsepower and a curb weight of 4849 pounds, translating to an advantageous 7.6 pounds per horsepower. In contrast, the Porsche Macan GTS Electric delivers 563 horsepower but carries a heavier 5426-pound mass, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 9.3 pounds per horsepower. This disparity in raw power and weight significantly influences their acceleration dynamics.
The difference in power-to-weight ratios gives the Ioniq 5 N a notable lead in straight-line performance, rocketing from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.0 seconds, three-tenths faster than the Macan. This advantage extends to the quarter-mile, where the Hyundai finishes in 11.1 seconds compared to the Porsche's 11.6 seconds. However, the Porsche regains ground in braking and handling. Despite its greater mass, the Macan's 15.7-inch vented front discs enable it to stop from 70 mph in an impressive 148 feet, outperforming the Ioniq 5 N's 153 feet. In terms of cornering ability, both SUVs demonstrate commendable grip, with the Macan achieving 0.99 g on optional Pirelli P Zero Corsa PZC4 tires and the Hyundai achieving 0.96 g on Pirelli P Zero PZ4 Elect tires.
Beyond raw performance, the Macan GTS Electric distinguishes itself with a larger 95 kWh battery, offering a superior EPA-estimated range of 294 miles compared to the Ioniq 5 N's 84 kWh battery and 221-mile range. This gap widens in highway driving, where the Macan achieves 290 miles versus the Ioniq 5 N's 190 miles. The Porsche also boasts faster charging, averaging 148 kW in DC fast-charging tests, outperforming the Hyundai's 129 kW. However, the Ioniq 5 N offers more practical cargo space, providing 26 cubic feet behind its rear seats compared to the Macan's 17 cubic feet.
