In the expansive realm of PC gaming, the quest for cost-effective hardware often leads to innovative solutions. While a plethora of premium gamepads exist, the true challenge lies in identifying the most affordable yet functional options. This discussion centers on a particularly thrifty creation: a self-assembled controller that promises to satisfy basic gaming needs for a remarkably low price.
Christened the "Undercooked V0.4," this unique gamepad stands out for its deliberate simplicity. Eschewing a traditional directional pad and a full complement of buttons, it features a single analog stick, along with designated 'X', 'A', and menu buttons. A 'B' button is cleverly integrated into the device's right shoulder, emphasizing its stripped-down design ethos. The creator, known as Lazy_Duck, conceived this project with the goal of accessibility, ensuring that all necessary components could be readily sourced from small electronics vendors, prioritizing speed and cost-efficiency.
The construction of this budget-friendly controller deviates from conventional manufacturing. Rather than relying on a complete printed circuit board, the "Undercooked V0.4" utilizes a protoboard in conjunction with an RP2040-Zero microcontroller. This ingenious approach streamlines the assembly process, allowing for completion within approximately six hours and keeping material costs under €10 (roughly $11.22). Its design, reminiscent of early tech from a bygone era, undeniably offers a certain nostalgic appeal through its sheer novelty.
One notable aspect of the "Undercooked V0.4" is its robust construction. The shell, fabricated from 150 grams of 3D-printed filament and fortified with heat-set threaded inserts, suggests a resilient device capable of withstanding rough handling. However, the ergonomic implications of its design, particularly the numerous 3D-printed ridges and a completely flat backside, raise concerns about user comfort during extended gaming sessions. While sanding the outer surfaces might mitigate some discomfort, the fundamental flat profile remains a potential ergonomic hurdle.
Ultimately, while its comfort and full functionality might be debated, the "Undercooked V0.4" represents an intriguing endeavor for electronics enthusiasts and gamers on a tight budget. It serves as an accessible and affordable electronics project, regardless of whether it becomes a primary gaming peripheral. Its true value may lie less in its performance and more in the satisfaction derived from its creation.
