DC Studios is diligently developing a variety of Batman-centric and related projects, including the live-action movie 'The Brave and the Bold' and a television series centered on Poison Ivy. Among these upcoming releases, the highly anticipated animated feature 'Dynamic Duo' is slated for 2028. This ambitious film will shine a spotlight on two iterations of Robin: Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The production promises a visually distinctive experience, utilizing a creative fusion of miniature sets, intricate puppetry, advanced animatronics, and cutting-edge computer-generated imagery to bring its heroic figures to life.
Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, has officially announced the actor who will embody one of these iconic Robins. During an interview with Collider, Safran confirmed that Mason Thames, known for his role in 'How to Train Your Dragon', has been cast as Dick Grayson. Grayson is recognized as DC's inaugural Boy Wonder, who later evolved into the hero Nightwing. Safran expressed his enthusiasm for Thames's performance, stating, "Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He came in, and auditioned the heck out of it, and was awesome." This confirmation follows earlier reports from Hollywood insiders in September regarding Thames's involvement. Other reported cast members include Logan Kim as Jason Todd, Marsai Martin as Barbara Gordon, Lee Pace as Red Hood 1, and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood 2. Arthur Mintz is directing 'Dynamic Duo', which is scheduled for release on September 22, 2028.
Understanding the intricate continuity of comic book narratives can be challenging, and DC Studios' upcoming slate further diversifies this landscape. While projects like 'Superman' and 'Clayface' are integrated into the primary DC Universe (DCU), along with 'The Brave and the Bold', films such as Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's 'The Batman' series exist within a separate narrative branch, classified as Elseworlds stories. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios alongside Safran, has previously clarified that 'Dynamic Duo' will not be part of the main DCU continuity. This suggests that the animated feature will likely also be categorized as an Elseworlds story, unfolding within its own distinct narrative universe. Dick Grayson holds a prominent place as the most recognized Robin within the Bat Family, having been portrayed by various actors across different adaptations, including Chris O'Donnell in 'Batman Forever' and 'Batman & Robin', Brenton Thwaites in 'Titans', Scott Menville in 'Teen Titans', and Burt Ward in the 1966 'Batman' television series.
