Christopher Nolan's cinematic triumph, "The Odyssey," has officially claimed the top spot as South Korea's highest-earning international film, eclipsing "Avatar: The Way of Water." As of October 11, the film's cumulative gross reached an astonishing KRW139.2 billion ($101.5 million). This remarkable achievement places it as the leading Hollywood production ever in the territory, with only two domestic South Korean films surpassing its earnings. "The King's Warden" currently holds the all-time record with KRW153.2 billion ($111.7 million), while "Extreme Job" from 2019 closely precedes "The Odyssey" with KRW139.6 billion ($101.8 million).
"The Odyssey" has captivated a vast audience, with admissions soaring to 12 million, which represents approximately 24% of South Korea's total population. This figure is particularly significant as no other international film has reached the 10 million admissions mark this year. The film's popularity was further solidified by its remarkable seven-weekend reign at the No. 1 spot, marking the longest consecutive streak for a foreign title in the country. This widespread appeal underscores the film's cultural impact and its ability to resonate deeply with Korean moviegoers.
This monumental success makes "The Odyssey" Christopher Nolan's most successful film in South Korea and Universal Pictures' highest-grossing title in the region. The film has also set new benchmarks in premium formats, holding the IMAX record with its extended run into its tenth week. It has attracted more admissions on IMAX and Dolby Cinema screens than any other film released in Korea, with IMAX showings consistently selling out for five consecutive weeks—an unprecedented feat. "The Odyssey" reached 10 million admissions in just 33 days, faster than any non-franchise international release, and became the first international film with a 15+ rating to achieve this milestone. Nolan now stands as the first director to have two non-franchise international films exceed 10 million admissions in South Korea.
The film's extraordinary success was propelled by an exceptionally strong pre-release demand. "The Odyssey" recorded the year's highest advance ticket sales and maintained its lead in Korean presales for 43 consecutive days until September 14, setting a new record for the longest such run. By September 13, it had dominated the international box office for 40 consecutive days, another unparalleled achievement. The Korean promotional tour itself broke several post-pandemic records, including a press conference in Seoul attended by 209 media members, the largest turnout since the pandemic. A premiere event hosted by CGV drew an astounding 32,411 applications, reflecting a 463-to-1 ratio and marking the highest participation rate ever for a Korean premiere hosted by the exhibitor. The visiting delegation made 11 appearances across Korean TV and online platforms, and the tour's Cine21 Master Talk garnered over 1 million views, setting a new record for the series.
The film's buzz was further amplified by organic endorsements from prominent Korean celebrities, including Jungkook of BTS, Soobin of TXT, and members of Riize, who publicly recommended the film. This celebrity backing fueled extensive social media conversation. Content voluntarily created by influencers and YouTubers generated an estimated KRW1.27 billion (approximately $1 million) in earned media value. Furthermore, sales of books related to "The Odyssey" surged thirty-fold after the film's release. Christopher Nolan's unprecedented appearance on Korea's non-drama buzzworthiness chart, typically reserved for local television personalities, further underscored the film's pervasive cultural impact. Each new release of IMAX tickets consistently led to server congestion on CGV's platform, followed by immediate sellouts, illustrating the immense and sustained public demand.
