Nearly fifteen years have passed since BioWare’s co-founders, Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, announced their departure from the video game industry. Both have maintained their distance, with Muzyka focusing on his investment firm, ThresholdImpact, and academic roles, while Zeschuk manages his brewing company, Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company, alongside a few former BioWare colleagues.
However, Zeschuk recently re-entered the public discourse following Electronic Arts' decision to close BioWare. Speaking to 80lv, he shared his initial reaction to the news, which he received during a fishing trip. While acknowledging the personal sadness and loss for the city of Edmonton, BioWare's home, he emphasized his greater concern for the employees now facing unemployment.
Zeschuk reflected on BioWare's acquisition by EA, stating that he had no regrets about the decision, as it provided crucial stability during the studio's growth. He believed there was significant value in being part of a larger entity, despite the inherent risks of independent development. Yet, he foresaw potential challenges for BioWare when EA was acquired by Saudi Arabia's PIF, suggesting that BioWare's unique, time-intensive game development model might not align with a business focused on annually released sports titles.
A notable aspect of Zeschuk's critique was directed at the prevailing belief that successful games can be created by "random people and AI" in the current climate of studio consolidations and cost-cutting measures. He asserted that many business leaders in the industry lack practical experience in game development, stating, "none of these people have ever made a game, like, never really sat and made one, like, from start to finish, even a small thing, they just don't know how it works."
Zeschuk, who possesses firsthand knowledge of the intricate process of game creation, reiterated his satisfaction with being a consumer rather than a developer. Despite the allure of returning, he remains firm in his decision, acknowledging the immense personal struggle and effort required to craft a truly exceptional game. His past experiences in the demanding world of game development have left him with no desire to re-enter that intense environment.
