After achieving a major milestone with the $5 billion initial public offering of Pershing Square USA, Ltd. (PSUS) on the New York Stock Exchange, billionaire investor Bill Ackman's firm has been actively allocating its newly acquired capital. In the second quarter of 2026, Pershing Square successfully deployed over 95% of PSUS's funds into a diverse portfolio of 14 investments, marking a highly productive period for the firm.
Among the 14 investments, six prominent new positions were established. These include leading companies such as Visa (V), Mastercard (MA), Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), Netflix (NFLX), Alcon (ALC), and S&P Global (SPGI). Ackman expressed confidence in these selections, characterizing them as businesses with straightforward operations, predictable cash flow generation, robust competitive advantages, minimal reliance on financial leverage and capital markets, and exceptional management teams.
Pershing Square's portfolio, as of the second quarter of 2026, showcases a balanced mix of established and growth-oriented companies. The holdings include significant stakes in Uber Technologies (UBER), Brookfield Corporation (BN), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Howard Hughes Holdings (HHH), Restaurant Brands International (QSR), and Meta Platforms (META). New additions like Visa, Mastercard, and S&P Global also constitute substantial portions, alongside smaller positions in Pershing Square USA (PSUS), Seaport Entertainment Group (SEG), and Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ).
Ackman has keenly observed the increasing concentration within the stock market, noting that in the first half of the year, a vast majority of the S&P 500's gains were driven by just two sectors: semiconductors and technology hardware and equipment. Despite these sectors representing a smaller portion of the overall companies, their outsized influence created a unique market environment. Ackman views this divergence as an opportunity to find undervalued assets outside the prevailing tech narrative.
This market dynamic allowed Pershing Square to deploy nearly $5 billion of PSUS capital at what it considers attractive valuations. Ackman's investment philosophy prioritizes generating substantial returns over extended periods, rather than focusing on short-term market fluctuations. He aims for gross annual returns exceeding 20% across all managed funds and companies, reflecting a commitment to sustainable, long-term value creation.
Inspired by Warren Buffett's investment principles, Bill Ackman has transitioned his strategy over the years. Formerly known for activist investing and aggressive short-selling, he announced a permanent retirement from activist short-selling in 2022. His current ambition is to build a "modern-day Berkshire Hathaway," emphasizing long-term, shareholder-centric principles and holding investments for the long haul. This strategic shift underscores a mature and patient approach to capital allocation.
Following its successful public offering, Pershing Square reported an earnings beat for its first full quarter. The firm has also made private investments utilizing its balance sheet, which are set to form the foundation of the new Pershing Square Ventures portfolio. This initiative aims to democratize access to pre-IPO investment opportunities, allowing a broader range of investors to participate in promising early-stage companies, consistent with Ackman's vision of creating accessible and impactful investment avenues.
