His roles span a wide range of genres and critical acclaim, including memorable performances in "The Social Network," "Never Let Me Go," and the superhero saga "The Amazing Spider-Man." Recently, Garfield starred in Luca Guadagnino's latest production, "Artificial," where he portrays the pioneering figure in artificial intelligence, Sam Altman.
In recognition of his extensive body of work and profound impact on the cinematic landscape, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival has chosen Garfield for its most distinguished honor: the Maltin Modern Master Award. This prestigious award, named after the legendary film critic and historian Leonard Maltin, acknowledges individuals who have significantly enriched culture through their achievements in the motion picture industry. Garfield, a two-time Oscar nominee, will be celebrated during an evening event featuring a curated selection of clips from his career, followed by an engaging discussion. Leonard Maltin himself will moderate this insightful conversation, taking place at the historic Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara on Saturday, February 6, 2027.
The Modern Master Award, established in 1995, underwent a renaming in 2015 to honor Leonard Maltin, who has a long-standing history of moderating tributes at the festival. Garfield joins an illustrious list of past recipients, including celebrated actors and filmmakers such as Adam Sandler, Angelina Jolie, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, and Clint Eastwood. This diverse group of honorees underscores the award's commitment to recognizing a wide spectrum of talent and influence within the film world.
Leonard Maltin, in a statement regarding Garfield's selection, lauded the actor's ability to seamlessly transition between mainstream Hollywood blockbusters and more artistically challenging, director-driven projects. Maltin emphasized that balancing such a varied career with consistent excellence is a rare feat, and Garfield has achieved it with remarkable success. His versatility and commitment to his craft have earned him both critical acclaim and a devoted audience.
The 42nd edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is scheduled to run from February 3 to February 13, 2027. In addition to Andrew Garfield, other notable honorees have already been announced, including John Malkovich for his role in "Wild Horse Nine," further highlighting the festival's dedication to celebrating outstanding talent in cinema.
